A big round of applause  to our 2016 SS4 writers brodskales Ancusmitis & Lugal! It was a busy winter season and they went above and beyond to find time to write their entries, which are located at > writers-guild-da.deviantart.co…

Beneath the reviews and awards is the announcement for entries to the 1st quarter Short Story contest of 2017!!

SS4 Reviews:

“Rough Draft Gumbo” by brodskales at fav.me/daqaizu
Aleš entry is based on the Beauty cover (fav.me/d84sh5l). This one I would mark Rated-R (do stories get ratings like the movies do??) based on strong language and sexually implicit content coupled with violence. Now that that is out of the way... I feel like reading Aleš shorts goes into the same part of my brain that I use to solve for riddles. On one hand, I feel like I know what to expect, he has a very distinct style that is a mixture of bluntness and poetic rhyme schemes. On the other hand, I have to approach each submission with an open mind and a readiness to interpret the content because despite the directness of his language, the point of his papers are purposefully obscure. Looking at "Gumbo" my takeaway is that the narrator has committed a crime and was bodyswapped with a robot as punishment. Out of anger at the loss of his (or her) human benefits such as drugs sex and rock and roll alcohol, (s)he goes on to commit a slew of additional crimes and perverts the same human benefits that they're angry at having lost in the first place. Then it gets really muddled and becomes nonsense. But I think the author knows this, as he gave a disclaimer to as much in his deviation description.

“Artemisia and Aiaia" by Ancusmitis at fav.me/das1g1q
Ancus Mītis's submission was also based on the cover Beauty, and what I find very clever was the way Ancus managed to tailor it to and submit for two contests (ours and another) despite our minimum word count being their maximum. That took some ingenuity to make it fit perfectly on the precipice. That being said, were it not for the word count restrictions I would have liked to have been given more context as to who was saying what and where they were when they were saying it. The story jumps around a lot, it was an ambitious plot for such a small space but I believe Mītis was able to pull it off. The opening was clunky and confusing, but the further along we read the smoother it gets. This is a story of opposition and compromise for the greater good. Its about finding peace, and it takes time, and is achieved through a billion small steps rather than one solidary leap. The competitive nature between the best warriors in both nations was interesting to read and kept my interest more so than the river God's revelation. It ends with hope, and on a positive path for growth, which stayed true to the pacing of the story. I think too often we rush to button up the end of our stories too far in advance of their natural timing and it can come across as premature and unrealistic. I agree with Ancus' choice not to do that and to let it unfold in the "what-ifs" of our minds as the readers. The characters and their relation to each other are interesting enough that I think new chapters to this story could be written and do really well with readers, my only suggestion would be to add that context I mentioned earlier.

“Hellfire Angel” by Lugal at fav.me/das22vn
Andrew chose the other cover "Hellfire Angel" (fav.me/d5l8e0c) and he used it in the text to name a pub which is awesome! This story was a lot to digest, but not in a bad way. It has some fabulous characters, with a good variety of fantasy elements. The story is contained enough for a short while still being action-packed to the end. I like the dialogue, it read very smoothly and gave the characters their own personalities. This would easily convert into a screenplay because it is so dialogue driven, but as a story I would have liked to see a bit more narration. The essentials are there, we get just enough information to tell us where in the story universe the characters are from scene to scene, and what props are in a scene that matter to the action that is going to take place. Again, as a screenplay this would be easy to adapt and Im sure it would catch the interest of a LOT of filmmakers. As a novella or novel though, I believe adding those rich details will really rocket this story into the next tier. In Andrews deviation description he links readers to a completed novel that predates this short, so if you really enjoyed "Hellfire Angel", you know where to go to find more!

Every year I approach the 4th quarter with uncertainty. It is a very busy season after all, so many holidays, so many family related travels, etc. and that means fewer opportunities for writers to enter. While I would never want to take away from the holiday cheer and family events I can't help but wonder if I'll be looking at an empty submissions section on new years day. If we ever have a quarter where that comes to pass don't worry, we'll just move on to the next. I know the real world can be demanding so I'll understand if we end up skipping a few. Despite misgivings, this year was not the year to forgo awards, since lo-and-behold we have entries!! :) Thank you all again for keeping the contest alive and being apart of a community of writers that participate together. Without further adieu, I give you your winners:

*A book trailer was not offered for the 4th quarter since the winter holidays are a busy time for all of us and our availability to film decreases during this time. That also applies to production on the Associate/Darkest Midnight which will initiate production again now that the holidays have concluded. Look forward to seeing that trailers release in the coming months, possibly even before 2017SS1 ends.

Important Information about the timeline
I know most if not all of our contestants are always anxious to hear the results, so I felt a little breakdown of how the timing is planned was in order:
-There is a reason why everything is spaced out exactly the way it is. Firstly, each contest last 3 months total, making it possible to have 4 quarters per year.
-The writing and entry portion of the contest last the first 2 months, providing ample time to contestants to get their entries finished
-The judging portion of the contest last 1 month, allowing the judge(s) time to read all the entries and make a fair decision for the winners
-Prizes other than DA Points are awarded between the day the winners are announced and the end of the following quarter *DA Points are awarded immediately

ALL aspects of the breakdown per quarter provide excess time for irl issues that can and do come up. (Not just for the contestants, but for the host as well)

HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK!!!
